Elementary Knowledge of GPON

PON (Passive Optical Network) has always been considered as a promising technology in the optical access network, breaking the traditional point-to-point solution. It is an economical and future oriented multi service user access technology in solving broadband access problems. PON is divided into GPON and EPON. GPON can be said to be an upgraded version of EPON. There is little technical difference between GPON and EPON. The main difference between the two is the interface, and their switching, network element management, and user management are similar or even the same. In comparison, GPON has more advantages in multi-service bearing and full-service operation, mainly because the GPON standard is formulated by the FSAN organization, and FSAN is dominated by operators.

EPON adopts Gigabit Ethernet as the transmission protocol at the transmission medium layer, and also adopts the Ethernet protocol at the data link layer. Due to the relatively low price of Ethernet related devices, and for the data services carried by Ethernet, Which account for an increasing proportion of communication traffic, EPON eliminates the protocol and format conversion of IP data transmission, and the transmission rate reaches 1.25 Gb/s and there is room for further upgrading, so EPON has attracted widespread attention. Considering that EPON is unable to provide high-quality assurance for real-time service transmission, and lacks carrier-level network monitoring and service management, it later launched the optical access network GPON (Gigabit capable PON) solution with gigabit high-speed, high-efficiency, supporting multi-service transparent transmission, while providing clear service quality assurance and service level, carrier level network monitoring and service management. GPON is a flexible gigabit optical fiber access network proposed by ITU-T. It carries multiple services with ATM cells and GEM frames, and supports broadband full-service access for commercial and residential services.
